Empathy vs Exploitation – Travel Photography Done Right
The aim of this presentation, recorded on 21st January 2024 with the Royal Photographic Society, is to examine the relationship between the photographer and their subject. More specifically, to break down the barriers between the travel photographer and the people they are photographing.
In this talk I recounted a number of lessons I have learned in my travels that have given me the confidence to put myself out there. How do we avoid offending people as visiting tourists and instead earn their trust?
How is it possible to step into someone’s back yard, like the following image from Sumbawa in Indonesia? An understanding of cultural norms and acceptances is important, so how do we go about learning these?
I am posting here the complete talk, complete with many unseen images from our travels over the last twenty years.
