Our boat trip to Komodo National Park was probably the last time I used an off-camera flash extensively. It was one of those periods when I was in the zone and felt fully confident getting up close with my subjects.

There were two main locations I chose for these photographs: the beach near where we anchored, and the old town either side of the main strip.

There’s a mix of Indonesians here. Many are local residents, fighting the ever-growing socio-economic impacts of mass tourism; many others are Indonesian tourists from other islands.

Despite appearances, almost every encounter culminates in a chat or a request to view the photograph. Being in a tourist area in Indonesia helps, as local people tend to love having their photographs taken. We’ve spent many hours lining up with local tourists for selfies.
